A Cloud Settles over the Campus

That’s not a weather forecast.  Rather it describes the changing nature of IT services in higher education.  The Chronicle of Higher Education reports that more and more campuses are turning to outside vendors to provide IT-related services ranging from distance learning platforms to the campus e-mail system.  For example, the Chronicle reports that, according to a recent survey, three-quarters of campus chief information officers report that they now use an outside service for e-mail.  Indeed, many campuses now rely of Google’s Gmail system.  The campus retains its “.edu” email address, but the messages themselves are sent through and/or managed by our good friends at Google.
