World’s 10 “Smartest” Cities?

Fast Company has put out its list of the globe’s ten smartest cities:  those that use Internet connectivity to promote sustainability, quality of life, etc.  Some are intriguing.  Planit Valley, Portugal (#3) is a new town being designed as if it were a single nervous system, using telecommunications technology to “regulate all facets of running a city such as water, energy and waste.”

What is a little disconcerting about all of this is that you have to get pretty far down the list to Dubuque, Iowa (#8) and (ironically) Ho Chi Minh City (#10) to find cities that look like they are actually designed for people to live in.  The rest look like sets for a remake of Fahrenheit 451.

What price “smartness?”
