Upstate NY: Highest Tax Rates in US

So says a new study by the Tax Foundation.

New York’s highest-in-the-nation property tax burden is an ongoing story.

But now the focus is shifting upstate in light of data showing that the nation’s 15 highest taxed counties are all north of the New York City suburbs or in the western part in the state, when calculated by taxes as a percentage of home values.

The Albany Times Union has the full story here.

Of course bunches of legislators immediately jumped on this as a reason to champion the property tax cap, one of the most poorly conceived ideas ever to come out of the legislative sausage works.  (It is sort of like trying to cure abdominal swelling with a girdle, rather than bothering to figure out what might be causing it.)  And it’s worked real well for California, too.
