Chart of the Day: The Incredible Shrinking Amtrak

Ever wonder why (even in a time of rising fuel prices) no one takes the train?  This visual from Fast Company shows the decline of rail passenger service over the past 50 years.  As the article points out, there is potential for reliable train service to replace some short-haul plane service and relieve the congestion (and reduce fuel consumption) at certain airline hubs in the US.  But we are hesitant to do this because of a general lack of train ridership.  This may be a case of “if you build it, they will ride.”
