Farewell to Wade Mainer

The Madison County NC Arts Council has word that traditional banjo player Wade Mainer has died at age 104:

Born in Stoney Knob North Carolina in 1907, Wade Mainer performed professionally beginning in 1932. He performed with his brother J.E. as part of  Mainer’s Mountaineers and later continued with his own group, The Sons of the Mountaineers. His heyday was during the popularity of “hillbilly music” in the 1930s and 1940s. Between 1935 and 1941, various Mainer brother combinations recorded more than 165 songs for RCA Victor, making them some of the most heavily recorded country artists of that era.

The video has a performance and interview with Mr. Mainer when he was a mere 101.
